The K Club in 2006: What the Last Irish Ryder Cup Produced
The 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club — Europe's joint-heaviest winning margin in the event's modern era — was the benchmark the 2027 match at Adare Manor will be measured against. The piece covers the 2006 result, the Palmer-designed course's setup, and the visitor and broadcast figures Fáilte Ireland recorded.

Europe beat the United States by 18½ to 9½ at the K Club — matching the widest Europe margin in the match's modern format, and the number every 2027 planner works backward from.
What Happened on the Straffan Course
The 2006 Ryder Cup ran from 22 to 24 September at the K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, played over the Palmer Course — the Arnold Palmer–designed parkland layout that opened in 1991 alongside the River Liffey. Europe's captain Ian Woosnam led a side that won five of the eight foursomes sessions, secured the fourballs convincingly, and closed the singles with enough points to make the final margin equal to Europe's largest margin under the current format: 18½–9½.
The Palmer Course presented no great aerial mystery. Wide fairways, generous rough lines, and water on fourteen holes produced a target-golf environment more familiar to the American players than the European contingent. That it made no difference is the match's most noted detail. Darren Clarke, playing weeks after the death of his wife Heather, won all three of his points and became the defining image of the week. Lee Westwood won four points from five. The US side, captained by Tom Lehman, never led after the opening session.

Setup for a Ryder Cup on a course without the compressing pressure of links ground required significant work. Rough was grown to a height and density the Palmer Course rarely carries for club play, and grandstand infrastructure spread across low-lying riverside ground that the club's drainage system had to manage around. Ryder Cup Europe operated in partnership with the PGA of America and the DP World Tour — then the European Tour — to deliver the format and referee structure.
What Fáilte Ireland Recorded
Fáilte Ireland's post-event assessment credited the 2006 Ryder Cup with generating substantial inbound tourism, placing the economic value in the hundreds of millions of euro for the island as a whole. Global broadcast reach was logged across more than 180 territories. Attendance across the three competitive days was capped by site capacity; demand far exceeded the ticket allocation. The match was held in Ireland for the first time; the last comparable global event was the Canada Cup at Portmarnock in 1960 — a different event, but the same underlying logic of placing a global golf property on Irish ground to generate lasting destination awareness.
The 2027 match at Adare Manor inherits that benchmark directly. Tom Fazio's rebuilt parkland at Adare carries a different course character than the Palmer layout at Straffan, but the Ryder Cup's appetite for wide, managed, non-links ground has not shifted. The 2006 result, the margin, and the economic template are what the Limerick venue will be judged against when September 2027 is done.
